Research into the Rupiah on the Nias Islands
The Vice-Governor of North Sumatra (Sumut), Surya, has called upon all residents of the Nias Islands to protect the rupiah as the sole legal tender in Indonesia.
He stated that the rupiah is not only a means of payment but also a symbol of sovereignty, national identity, and national honor.

Surya made this appeal while reading the speech of the Governor of North Sumatra, Muhammad Bobby Afif Nasution, and at the opening of the event ‘Research into the Rupiah on the Nias Islands’ at the city square of Gunungsitoli. The event was organized by the Sibolga office of Bank Indonesia (BI).
“The Nias Islands have enormous potential, ranging from world-class tourism, maritime business, agriculture, plantations, and SMEs as the backbone of the local economy,” said Surya.
He stated that this enormous potential must be supported by a safe and smooth payment system that reaches all segments of the population.
The Rupiah Exploration program is therefore aimed not only at distributing money suitable for circulation, but also at ensuring that the state offers equal access to the rupiah to all citizens.

“With this potential, we need the support of a safe and smooth payment system that can reach all segments of the population. The Rupiah Exploration program is not just about distributing money suitable for circulation, but also about guaranteeing equal access to the rupiah for the public,” said Vice Governor Surya.
Surya emphasized that the rupiah is a symbol of national sovereignty, national identity, and a reflection of national honor. Therefore, the public must recognize the importance of handling the rupiah carefully in order to extend its lifespan.
“The public must also have sufficient financial literacy. The use of digital payments, QR systems, mobile banking, and other payment methods must go hand in hand with the availability of cash to complement and support economic activities in the community,” he said.
He hopes that the Rupiah Exploration program will yield concrete benefits for the community, particularly by facilitating access to rupiah banknotes suitable for circulation on the Nias Islands.

Meanwhile, Riza Putera, head of the Bank Indonesia representative office in Sibolga, expressed his appreciation for the support of the North Sumatra Provincial Government for the event.
He stated that cooperation between banks, the government, the business community, and the public is essential for realizing an inclusive, efficient, and secure payment system that can stimulate sustainable regional economic growth.
The activity was marked by the launch of the Rupiah Exploration Team in Gunungsitoli, which will distribute circulation-ready rupiah banknotes to various regions on the Nias Islands in the province of North Sumatra. ***REL
