Public healthcare in North Nias improves
Public healthcare in the North Nias district continues to improve, in line with the North Sumatra Provincial Government’s commitment to optimizing the capacity of the Tafaeri Regional General Hospital (RSUD) since its opening in 2019.
This support is realized through improved facilities, additional medical staff, and strengthening the hospital’s service capacity.

The Vice Governor of North Sumatra, Surya, personally visited the Tafaeri Regional General Hospital in Lotu District, in the North Nias district, to check whether the facility improvements and additional medical staff meet the needs of the community.
During the visit, Surya inspected various treatment rooms and nursing wards. The Tafaeri Regional General Hospital features improved facilities following the construction of a new building by the central government, through the Ministry of Public Health, to increase service capacity.
Meanwhile, the provincial government of North Sumatra is also supporting the availability of specialist doctors through a partnership with the University of North Sumatra (USU).
“If the facilities are good, doctors must be well-trained. The governor wants all areas on Nias to lag behind, especially North Nias,” said Surya during the “Work on Nias” meeting.

According to him, healthcare services are one of the benchmarks for regional progress, as they are directly linked to the quality of life of the community. Therefore, increasing the capacity of the Tafaeri Regional Hospital is one of the priorities of Governor Bobby Nasution of North Sumatra to ensure equitable development on the Nias Islands.
Director Wariswan Lahagu of the Tafaeri Regional Hospital expressed his appreciation for the support of the provincial government of North Sumatra, which, according to him, has played an important role in increasing the hospital’s capacity. He explained that the healthcare facility has remained at the same level as primary care institutions since its opening in 2019.
In 2024, the Tafaeri Regional Hospital was upgraded to a Type D hospital. With a capacity of 50 beds, seven specialists, a dentist, seven general practitioners, and nearly 200 healthcare workers, including nurses, midwives, and other medical personnel, the hospital now meets the requirements for a Type C hospital.
“Without the support from the province in the form of specialists, our regional hospital might still be struggling. Therefore, we are very grateful to the Governor and the Vice-Governor for their attention to North Nias,” said Wariswan.

Meanwhile, the Vice-Regent of North Nias, Yusman Zega, stated that his region covers approximately 1,200 square kilometers, with a geographically diverse landscape dominated by highlands and challenging terrain. Therefore, there is still a great need for support regarding healthcare personnel and facilities.
“We also hope to receive assistance in the form of a hearse, as we have only used patient transport vehicles so far. But we are very pleased that the provincial government of North Sumatra is paying so much attention to North Nias. This is to ensure that this district is no longer considered underdeveloped,” he said.
When he concluded his visit, Surya advised the staff of the Tafaeri Regional Hospital and the North Nias District Government to always act with integrity.
According to him, the integrity of the leadership will serve as an example at all levels, improving the quality of service to the public and increasing public trust. ***REL
