Elderly man caught using counterfeit money in a supermarket

An elderly man from Medan, with the initials FL (67), was arrested by a vendor after being caught using counterfeit money (Upal).

The suspect was shopping at various stalls in the traditional market of Perbaungan (Pajak Baru), in the village of Batang Terab, Perbaungan district, Serdang Bedagai (Sergai) regency, on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at approximately 9:30 a.m. WIB.

Seller suspected of money transfer

The suspect allegedly posed as a grocery delivery driver for kitchen items such as shallots, garlic, and chili peppers, and paid with a 100,000 rupiah note that was suspected to be counterfeit. After the seller apprehended him, FL was handed over to the Perbaungan police.

“The seller became suspicious when he touched the money and felt it strange. Local residents chased and arrested the perpetrator, after which he was taken to the Perbaungan (Koramil) police station,” said witness Rita Yani, a Perbaungan resident.

Perbaungan Police Detective Chief Inspector SH Nauli Siregar stated that his team immediately investigated the information received from the public.

Police arrested the perpetrator and several counterfeit banknotes.

“Upon receiving the report, the operational team immediately went to the Perbaungan Military District Command (Koramil) to retrieve the perpetrator and the evidence, and then took them to the police station for further investigation,” the police chief said.

Police seized eight counterfeit 100,000 rupiah banknotes, 27,000 rupiah in cash, a black Nokia phone, and various groceries, including shallots and garlic, from the perpetrator.

“Based on sufficient preliminary evidence, the suspect and the evidence have been secured for further legal investigation,” said the head of the Perbaungan Criminal Investigation Unit.
