Cris Kuntadi, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Manpower, stated that musicians are part of the labor ecosystem and are entitled to employment and a decent standard of living.

This aligns with Article 27, paragraph (2) of the 1945 Constitution, which guarantees every citizen the right to work and a decent standard of living.

“There are two points to understand: first, every citizen has the right to work, and second, the right to a decent standard of living,” said Cris, as quoted in a press release from the Ministry of Manpower’s Public Relations Bureau.

Cris emphasized that improving the quality of the music industry must go hand in hand with improving the well-being of those who work within it, noting that not all musicians earn an adequate income.

In addition to enhancing competencies, the Ministry of Manpower is also addressing the protection of musicians—an effort that must be tailored to the specific nature of their work.

This includes establishing clarity in employment relationships, expanding access to social security, providing accident and life insurance, and ensuring occupational health and safety.

In an effort to strengthen the standardization of competencies, the Ministry of Manpower is also opening up opportunities for the development of Indonesian National Competency Standards (SKKNI), tailored to the specific needs and characteristics of work within the music industry.

The development of these standards will support the creation of more specific and relevant certification systems. Currently, there are 11 such systems in place, which can be further developed to meet the competency requirements of musicians.

Cris emphasized that professional certification is not intended to limit opportunities for musicians, but rather to provide recognition for their competencies.

Through certification provided by the National Professional Certification Agency (BNSP), musicians can demonstrate their proficiency, which in turn can bolster their professional standing.

Cris hopes that these efforts to strengthen and standardize national benchmarks for Indonesian music professionals will improve protections and ensure compliance with workers’ rights, while simultaneously fostering fair working conditions and increasing access to professional certification.

“The Indonesian music sector will grow stronger when its progress goes hand in hand with the well-being of the people who support it,” said Cris. ***rel

***rel
