Thieves are using begging mode at Medan Area Police Bondong

The public is advised to be more cautious when asking for donations (alms), as this person might be a thief.

This is reflected in the results of police arrests in Medan. Police have managed to uncover a case of mobile phone theft, a method of begging for alms, on Jalan Pasar Merah, Binjai Village, Medan Denai.

One perpetrator, named Roni Apul Haloho (30), a resident of Jalan Pasar III Datuk Kabu Tanah Garapan, Tembung Village subdistrict, Percut Sei Tuan district, Deli Serdang, was arrested.

The perpetrator stole a resident’s mobile phone that had been left on the victim’s motorcycle.

Medan Regional Police Chief Ainul Yaqin said the suspect was arrested on Monday, February 2, for stealing a Samsung A72 mobile phone from Indra Jaya (53), a resident of Jalan Halat Gang Thabib, Kota Matsum II Village, Medan Area District.

The suspect’s method was to pretend to ask for alms while carrying the donation box through the settlement.

After conducting an investigation, the suspect was arrested on Tuesday, February 24, on Jalan Siswa Ujung.

Based on his confession, the stolen mobile phone was sold for IDR 400,000, and the money was used for food and online gambling.

Theft is often committed by suspects who ask for donations while exploring opportunities.

“The perpetrator admitted that he used the money from the sale of his mobile phone to buy food and gamble on slot machines,” police said.

AKP Chief of Police for the Medan Region, M. Ainul Yaqin, said on Thursday (February 26, 2026).

AKP Yaqin revealed that the mobile phone theft case, carried out by the suspect, began on Monday (February 2, 2026) around 11:00 a.m. (WEB).

The victim had just arrived home at that time and parked his motorcycle on the patio, while his mobile phone was still on the dashboard.

Because he was tired, the victim immediately went to rest in his room. Around 1:00 p.m. (WEB), the victim’s wife, children, and grandchildren returned home, and the grandchildren wanted to use their mobile phones.

When I tried to take my mobile phone to the motorcycle, it was gone. After the loss, the victim checked the Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) footage and discovered that a man had entered the terrace and taken his mobile phone.

The man’s characteristics include wearing a sarong, a shirt, a backpack, a cap, and carrying an information box.

The former deputy chief of detectives at the Medan Police Department revealed that the suspect’s method of stealing was going from house to house and asking for alms.

As soon as the opportunity arose, he proceeded to steal valuables. He used a 1-meter-long piece of wood to reach the victim’s mobile phone, which was located in the glove compartment of the car.

“Initially, the perpetrator approached the house pretending to ask for alms for the poor. Then, the perpetrator stopped in front of the house and, using a piece of wood approximately 1 meter long, retrieved the mobile phone from the drawer of the complainant’s motorcycle, which was parked on the terrace of the house.”
