The Government of North Sumatra supports the role of the LPSK

The Acting Regional Secretary of the Province of North Sumatra (Sekdaprov), Sulaiman Harahap, supports strengthening the synergy between the Agency for Witness and Victim Protection (LPSK) and all regional government agencies (OPD) within the provincial government of North Sumatra (Pemprov).

This synergy is expected to strengthen protection efforts and ensure justice for witnesses and victims.

Sulaiman Harahap made this announcement during an audience with the LPSK team at his office in the office of the Governor of North Sumatra, Jalan Pangeran Diponegoro No. 30, Medan, on Thursday, March 5, 2026.

“The North Sumatra provincial government certainly supports a broader role for the LPSK. We are working with all provincial police stations in North Sumatra,” he said.

Instances of violence against children and women in North Sumatra

Previously, the North Sumatra provincial government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the LPSK (Lembaga Perempuan/Lembaga Witnesses and Victims Protection Agency) on victim protection. This collaboration is expected to contribute to reducing violence against children and women in North Sumatra.

The MOU places responsibility with the North Sumatra Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Agency.

6 Priority Programs of the LPSK

Meanwhile, LPSK Vice-Chairman Sri Suparyati explained that the LPSK has several priority programs aimed at strengthening protection services, safeguarding victims’ rights through restitution and compensation, and addressing priority cases such as sexual violence, human trafficking (TPPO), terrorism, and serious human rights violations.

By 2025, the LPSK’s main programs will include six national priority programs, including the provision of financial support to victims.

In 2025, the LPSK received 748 protection applications from North Sumatra. The submitted cases involved serious abuse and sexual violence against children.

He further stated that the LPSK will open three new representative offices in Central Java, East Java, and East Nusa Tenggara in 2025. These offices complement the two existing representative offices in the Special Region of Yogyakarta and North Sumatra, bringing the total number of LPSK representative offices to five.

“In 2024, the LPSK signed a memorandum of understanding with the provincial government of North Sumatra. The LPSK cannot work alone. Synergy between all parties is necessary so that witnesses and victims have the courage to report and receive appropriate protection and remedies,” he said. ***rel
