Report to Committee VIII of the Indonesian House of Representatives: North Sumatra Enters Flood Recovery and Reconstruction Phase
The Vice Governor of North Sumatra (Sumut), Surya, emphasized the commitment of the North Sumatra provincial government to strengthening social services and disaster response during a working visit by Committee VIII of the Indonesian House of Representatives to the office of the Governor of North Sumatra in Medan.
The meeting, which took place on Friday, February 20, 2026, served as a forum for strengthening synergy between the central and regional governments in the areas of social affairs, religion, and disaster management.

Surya stated that North Sumatra is currently in the recovery and reconstruction phase following the floods and landslides that occurred in late 2025.
He explained that the affected communities have moved into temporary housing, while the local government focuses on preparing for the restoration of livelihoods and the repair of essential infrastructure.

Surya also expressed his appreciation for the support of the central government and the Indonesian House of Representatives in responding to the floods and landslides that paralyzed several areas in North Sumatra and Aceh.
He said collaboration between different sectors is crucial for faster disaster response
“Thanks to our hard work, we successfully completed the emergency response phase in less than two months. Currently, we are focusing on strengthening technology-based risk mitigation and public awareness systems to reduce disaster risks in the long term,” he emphasized.
In addition to disaster management issues, preparations for the Hajj pilgrimage of 1447 A.D./2026 A.D. were also discussed during the meeting.
Surya expressed his optimism that the embarkation center in Medan would be able to maintain the highest quality of service for pilgrims.
He emphasized the commitment of the North Sumatra provincial government to maintaining excellent service standards, from the departure to the return of pilgrims.
Summary of regional ambitions and oversight of the religious and social budget
Meanwhile, Ansori Siregar, vice-chair of Committee VIII of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), stated that the visit during the recess was intended to gather regional ambitions and oversee the religious and social budget.
He emphasized that the DPR RI continues to promote budget policies that support general well-being.
“We want to know what strategic steps the North Sumatra provincial government is taking to optimize the regional budget for social protection and improving child nutrition. Empowering mothers is essential for the future. We want to ensure that women’s economic empowerment and children’s education programs are prioritized in North Sumatra,” Ansori said.
He hopes that this meeting will lead to a joint effort between the central and regional governments to maintain intensive communication, ensure targeted social assistance and strengthen the social resilience of the North Sumatran community in an inclusive manner. ***rel
