Repairs to Helvetia Pasar 9 Road Confirmed for August
Good news for residents of Marelan and the surrounding area: the damaged road in the vicinity of Helvetia Pasar 9 in the Deli Serdang district is set to be repaired soon.
North Sumatra Governor Muhammad Bobby Afif Nasution confirmed that repairs will begin in August 2026, following a personal inspection of the road’s condition.

Helvetia Pasar 9 Road is currently severely damaged and frequently causes traffic congestion, particularly because it provides access to the Helvetia toll gate.
This road, which serves as the primary route for residents of Medan Marelan and the surrounding area to reach Medan city center, has been the subject of numerous complaints from daily commuters.
“We have been planning work on this road for a long time. I even proposed repairs back when I was mayor. It wasn’t included in this year’s original plan, but thanks to additional funding received from the President, we have included it after all. God willing, we will begin the work next month,” said Bobby Nasution while at Jalan Veteran, Helvetia Pasar 9, Deli Serdang.
In addition to the repairs, Bobby Nasution stated that the North Sumatra provincial government will widen the road to 14 meters and use concrete surfacing. The provincial government will also improve the drainage system along a 24-kilometer stretch to make the road more resilient against damage.

“We are using concrete because we observe that most vehicles passing through are heavy trucks, and we want to maximize the width (14 meters). We will also repair the shoulders along a 12-kilometer stretch on both the left and right sides, totaling 24 kilometers,” said Bobby Nasution, accompanied by Chandra Dalimunthe, Head of the Public Works, Construction, and Public Facilities Agency (BMBKCK).
The North Sumatra provincial government will initially repair a 200-meter stretch of the road that has sustained the most severe damage. Bobby has also asked village and district officials to assist in keeping the drainage system clear during the repair work.
“We are informing the community that we are currently clearing the drainage so that the repairs can proceed smoothly,” Bobby Nasution explained.
Local resident Merry Chan said she frequently witnesses accidents at the location due to the damaged road. She expressed gratitude that the North Sumatra Governor’s concern regarding the road’s condition was reflected in the swift action taken to repair it.

Many accidents have occurred here: overturned rickshaws, broken axles, and people falling off trains. It is a terrible sight, and when it floods, you don’t know which way to go.
