Optimization of the North Sumatra Industrial Park through the integration of KIM, Kualatanjung, and the Port of Belawan
North Sumatra Governor Muhammad Bobby Afif Nasution wants to optimize the North Sumatra Industrial Park by integrating the Medan Industrial Park (KIM), the Sei Mangkei Special Economic Zone (KEK), the Port of Kualatanjung, and the Port of Belawan.
He made this statement during an audience with the board of directors of PT Danareksa (Persero) at the Tengku Rizal Nurdin Hall, Jalan Sudirman No. 41, Medan, on Thursday, January 22, 2026.
During the meeting, discussions focused on strengthening the industrial sector, efficient logistics, and water management in the North Sumatra industrial zone.
“I want North Sumatra to become a strong entity with efficient transport routes. We want to propose a system where products from our economic zone automatically have easy access to foreign countries. We would not have to impose new taxes once they leave the area, which would be a burden on businesses,” said Bobby Nasution.
Proposed Division of Labor Between the Ports of Belawan and Kualatanjung
Bobby also proposed a clear division of labor between the ports of Belawan and Kualatanjung, so they can support each other. “We must divide the roles fairly. If Kualatanjung is to thrive, its functions must be separated from those of Belawan.
Moreover, North Sumatra has the advantage of being geographically close to international markets. We must maximize this potential so we can compete with industrial areas outside North Sumatra,” he added.
Bobby further hopes that PT Danareksa can become a strategic partner for the regional government by supporting local farmers and businesses, enabling them to contribute to the national economic growth target of 8%, by making North Sumatra an integrated industrial center at the western gateway to Indonesia.
Collaboration in the development of industrial estates in North Sumatra
Meanwhile, Yadi Jaya Ruchandi, Managing Director and President of PT Danareksa (Persero), has expressed his company’s willingness to fully support the development of industrial estates in North Sumatra.
Danareksa is currently developing management processes for various industrial estates to ensure they function optimally under its management.
“Our visit is intended to ensure smooth operations, including the operational and legal regulations for groundwater management in the Medan industrial estate. We have already invested here and are also looking at development in Tanjung Kasau to expand the reach of industrial estates in North Sumatra,” said Yadi. ***obs
