Minister of Labour Yassierli confirms social security for all workers
The surviving relatives of a victim of a train accident received a social security benefit totaling Rp 435,624,820 after the victim was registered as a participant in the BPJS Ketenagakerjaan program in the non-wage recipient (BPU) segment.
Minister Yassierli emphasized the importance of social security to protect workers and their families against various risks.
“Today we see in practice how the state is present. The heirs of workers in the informal sector who had an accident have received social security benefits totaling more than 435 million Indonesian rupiah. This proves that social protection must be accessible to all workers without exception,” said Yassierli after attending the presentation of the compensation in Cikarang, Bekasi, West Java, on Monday, May 4, 2026.
The compensation was awarded to Baskoro Aji (31), husband and heir of the late Tutik Anitasari (31), one of the victims of the train accident at East Bekasi station on April 29, 2026. She leaves behind a husband and a toddler.
The benefits received include accident insurance (JKK) of 235,238,400 Indonesian rupees, a funeral benefit of 10,000,000 Indonesian rupees, an old-age pension (JHT) of 11,886,420 Indonesian rupees, and child grants worth 166,500,000 Indonesian rupees.
This case illustrates the importance of social security for all workers, including those in the informal sector. The government continues to encourage the expansion of social security for workers, including through a 50 percent reduction in premiums for the JKK (Insurance and Social Security) and death insurance (JKM) for employees of the BPU (Occupational Accidents Bureau).
According to Yassierli, this policy is intended to preserve people’s purchasing power while simultaneously increasing access to social protection amidst various economic challenges. “With this premium reduction, we want to ensure that more workers in the informal sector are protected. The premiums may be lower, but the protection remains fully guaranteed,” he emphasized.
He added that social security benefits are not limited to compensation, but also offer long-term protection to workers’ families, including scholarships for children.
The Director General of BPJS Ketenagakerjaan, Saiful Hidayat, stated that social security benefits offer workers’ families security and protection when they are at risk.
“These benefits ensure that workers’ families continue to enjoy economic security, so that they can continue their lives with greater security,” said Saiful.
With these various policy measures, the government confirms its commitment to ensuring that all workers – in both the formal and informal sectors – receive fair, inclusive, and sustainable social protection. ***rel
