Hooray!!! Residents of Nias no longer need to be treated off the island; the services of the Dr. Thomsen Nias Regional Hospital have improved
The Dr. Thomsen Nias Regional Hospital (RSUD) is an important referral hospital for the residents of the Nias Islands and provides healthcare without the need to leave the island.
The Provincial Government of North Sumatra (Pemprov) is committed to the continuous improvement of the facilities, staff, and quality of service at the hospital.
This was announced by the Vice Governor of North Sumatra (Sumut), Surya, during a visit to the Dr. Thomsen Nias Regional Hospital in Gunungsitoli.
During the visit, Surya inspected various medical facilities, including the patient rooms and bed capacity, of the Type C hospital, which he assessed as satisfactory. Moreover, the location in an urban area facilitates access to healthcare for the public, with a capacity for hundreds of admitted patients.
“I have seen good medical equipment before, including a CT scanner. That is very useful for scanning internal organs and mapping blood vessels in detail, so that doctors can detect internal problems, such as those in the nervous system. I have already been examined with it myself,” said Surya, who was accompanied by Titiek Sugiharti, a staff member of the North Sumatra Family Welfare Movement (TP PKK), and Ya’atulo Gulo, Regent of Nias.
According to Surya, strengthening hospital facilities is one of the development priorities of the provincial government of North Sumatra, particularly on the Nias Islands, which belong to the 3T areas (frontier, remote area, and underdeveloped area).

Therefore, Governor Muhammad Bobby Afif Nasution of North Sumatra wants to ensure that the community receives high-quality healthcare without having to be referred to other regions.
“I brought a message from the governor (Bobby Nasution). He wants to ensure that the Nias Islands are no longer considered underdeveloped. That is also a political promise that we must fulfill. Although it cannot be done all at once, it will happen in phases, because we also have to take other regions into account,” explained Surya.
He advised the management and all staff at the Dr. Thomsen Regional Hospital to always prioritize friendly, professional, and ethical service. He is convinced that high-quality care is an important factor in building trust in the hospital.
“People feel comfortable and at ease in this hospital. Even when patients are sick, they notice their condition improving before treatment, because the care is satisfactory,” said Surya.

Noferlina Zebua, Director of the Dr. Thomsen Regional Hospital on Nias, explained that the hospital has 230 beds for inpatients and offers various other medical services. However, the current CT scanner is defective, meaning patients requiring such examinations must be referred to a hospital outside Nias.
“We hope, sir, that the provincial government can help with the repairs. The equipment (spare parts) costs 2 billion rupiah. We also hope for support in recruiting staff, including specialized doctors and nurses who will undergo special training. We also hope for support in providing logistical support for healthcare on the Nias Islands,” said Noferlina.
Meanwhile, the Regent of Nias, Ya’atulo Gulo, stated that all regencies/cities on the Nias Islands now have hospitals, including private hospitals in Gunungsitoli. This situation has increased competition for healthcare services.
“And we announce that the central government has requested that the Nias Regency transfer the Dr. Thomsen Regional Hospital to the municipality of Gunungsitoli, via the Provincial Government of North Sumatra.

We are prepared to do this; we are only awaiting the procedure and the willingness of the municipality to manage this, including the existing staff,” said Ya’atulo.
He also expressed his appreciation for the attention the Provincial Government of North Sumatra is paying to prioritizing the development of healthcare on the Nias Islands. He believes that this step will stimulate regional progress and improve the well-being of the community. ***REL
