Flood and landslide victims in North Sumatra will receive aid in the form of household goods, life insurance, and working capital
North Sumatra Governor Muhammad Bobby Afif Nasution will soon issue a decree (SK) regarding housing affected by floods and landslides. This is intended to accelerate the distribution of aid to communities affected by disasters and landslides, so that it can be disbursed before the end of November 2025.
Only 15 regions have issued decrees for disaster-affected housing
So far, 15 regions in North Sumatra have issued decrees for disaster-affected housing. Meanwhile, two regions are still in the process: Tebingtinggi Regency and Medan City. Two other regions, Asahan Regency and Batubara Regency, have not yet submitted applications.
“We will issue a governor’s decree today to expedite the distribution of aid to the community. The remaining decrees will be refined, as the National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB) believes data may be corrected in the future,” North Sumatra Governor Bobby Nasution said during a virtual coordination meeting on post-disaster data collection with the Ministry of the Interior, held from his private residence, the Tasbih Complex in Medan, on Tuesday, January 6, 2026.
The expedited issuance of this decree is expected to accelerate post-disaster recovery in North Sumatra. This will reduce the number of people staying in evacuation centers, especially those whose homes sustained minor to moderate damage.
“Our people who want to return home, clean their homes, and resume their activities need assistance. The Ministry of Social Affairs and the BNPB (National Security and Public Health Bureau) are providing this assistance so we can reduce the number of people in evacuation centers,” said Bobby Nasution.
Financial support for furniture, life insurance, and business capital
According to data from the Ministry of Social Affairs, emergency post-disaster assistance of INR 3 million per family is being prepared for furniture and household appliances. Life insurance of INR 450,000 per person per month for three months is also being offered, and start-up capital of INR 5 million per family for start-ups is being provided.
In addition, the Ministry of Social Affairs is also making INR 15 million available per victim for death and INR 5 million per victim for serious injuries. This aid has currently been distributed to 111 bereaved families in the districts of Pidie and Pidie Jaya, Sibolga, and Padang Panjang.
“We, through the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), will distribute this aid based on the name and address data provided by the regions. The regions will map the affected communities. The sooner the data is collected, the sooner the aid can be disbursed,” said Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf.
Decree for disaster-affected homes will be issued immediately
According to BNPB data, homes with minor damage will receive 15 million rupiah in stimulus aid, homes with moderate damage 30 million rupiah, and homes with severe damage 60 million rupiah.
Interior Minister Tito Karnavian emphasized the need for immediate data collection and the issuance of a decree for the provinces affected by floods and landslides, so that residents with minor and moderate damage can resume their normal activities.
“The key to all of this is the speed of the data. If it is fast, people with minor to moderate damage can receive assistance quickly. They can return home, clean their homes, and resume their activities. Without government support, our community is very resilient. They sell goods near evacuation centers and run small businesses. Imagine if we could provide this assistance quickly, then the recovery would be faster,” said Tito Karnavian. ***rel
