Education Minister Nadiem Makarim sentenced to 9 years in prison and 548 billion rupiah in restitution
The Jakarta District Court of Appeal has sentenced defendant Nadiem Makarim to 9 years in prison, a fine of 1 billion rupiah, and restitution of 548,761,031,950 rupiah (548 billion rupiah) for corruption regarding the procurement of Chromebook laptops.
The Court of Appeal read out the verdict during a hearing at the High Court in Jakarta on Thursday, September 24, 2026.

“We sentence defendant Nadiem Anwar Makarim to 9 years in prison,” the judge declared.
The judge ruled that the judge at the Central Jakarta Corruption Court had handled the case properly. The judge also adjusted the restitution amount for Nadiem.
“The panel of judges at the court of first instance properly assessed the case in question, regarding both the evidence and the application of the law,” the judge stated while reading the verdict.
The Court of Appeal determined that the state had suffered losses amounting to 1.5 trillion Indonesian rupiah (IDR) in this case. The judges found Nadiem guilty of violating Article 604 of the Criminal Code.

The Court of Appeal also reduced the restitution Nadiem was required to pay in the Chromebook procurement corruption case from 809 billion IDR to 548 billion IDR. The judges stated that the restitution was intended to compensate for the state’s loss in this case, specifically 1,567,888,662,716.74 IDR (1.5 trillion IDR).
The judges ruled that this loss stemmed from the procurement of Chromebook laptops by Nadiem and various other parties. They stated that the imposition of restitution for state losses must not be arbitrary.
The appellate court also reduced the compensation Nadiem was ordered to pay in the corruption case involving the procurement of Chromebook laptops, lowering the amount from 809 billion Indonesian rupiah to 548 billion Indonesian rupiah.
The judges noted that the compensation was intended to cover the state’s losses in this case, which totaled 1,567,888,662,716.74 Indonesian rupiah (1.5 trillion Indonesian rupiah).
The court declared that the losses arose from the procurement of Chromebook laptops by Nadiem and various other parties. It held that the imposition of liability for state losses must not be arbitrary.
“The imposition of additional penalties must still adhere to the principles of proportionality and the individualization of sentencing, ensuring that liability is not assigned beyond the scope of the defendant’s role in the proven offense,” the judge stated.
The court ruled that Nadiem, as the minister at the time of the project, was the principal perpetrator and must be held responsible for restoring state finances to their original state. The court further declared that those who illegally profited from the project—thereby causing financial loss to the state—must also be held accountable. ***adh

Majelis hakim banding pada Pengadilan Negeri Daerah Khusus Jakarta menjatuhkan vonis hukuman selama 9 tahun, denda Rp.1 miliar dan membayar uang pengganri Rp.548.761.031.950 (Rp548 miliar) terhadap terdakwa Nadiem Makarim, atas perkara korupsi pengadaan Laptop Chromebook.
Pembacaan putusan majelis hakim ini disampaikan pada persidangan yang di gelar di PT DK Jakarta, Kamis, 24 September 2026.
“Menjatuhkan pidana kepada Terdakwa Nadiem Anwar Makarim oleh karena itu dengan pidana penjara selama 9 tahun,” ujar hakim.
Hakim menyatakan hakim PN Tipikor Jakarta Pusat telah mempertimbangkan perkara secara tepat. Hakim juga mengubah uang pengganti Nadiem.
“Pertimbangan majelis hakim tingkat pertama telah mempertimbangkan perkara a quo secara tepat, baik dalam penilaian terhadap pembuktian dan penerapan hukum,” ujar hakim saat membacakan putusan.
Hakim banding menyatakan kerugian negara akibat kasus ini ialah Rp 1,5 triliun. Hakim menyatakan Nadiem bersalah melanggar Pasal 604 KUHP.
Majelis hakim banding juga mengurangi hukuman uang pengganti Nadiem dalam kasus korupsi pengadaan laptop Chromebook dari Rp 809 miliar menjadi Rp 548 miliar. Hakim menyatakan uang pengganti ditujukan untuk memulihkan kerugian negara dalam kasus ini, yakni Rp 1.567.888.662.716,74 (Rp 1,5 triliun).
Hakim menyatakan kerugian tersebut ditimbulkan dari pengadaan laptop Chromebook yang dilakukan Nadiem bersama sejumlah pihak. Hakim menyatakan pemulihan kerugian negara tak boleh dibebankan secara sewenang-wenang.

Hakim menyatakan Nadiem selaku menteri saat proyek ini terjadi merupakan pelaku utama dan harus bertanggung jawab mengembalikan keuangan negara seperti posisi semula. Hakim juga menyatakan pihak-pihak yang mendapat keuntungan secara ilegal dari proyek yang menyebabkan kerugian negara juga harus dimintai pertanggungjawaban. ***adh
