Cooperation to improve healthcare on the Nias Islands
The Provincial Government of North Sumatra (Pemprov) guarantees that the improvement of healthcare on the Nias Islands will take place in cooperation with the district administrations.
This synergy is expected to strengthen healthcare facilities and their quality, particularly in the community health centers (Puskesmas), which provide primary care.

This was communicated by the Vice Governor of North Sumatra, Surya, during a visit to the Botombawo Community Health Center in the Hiliserangkai district, in the Nias region. The visit was intended to ensure the effective implementation of the healthcare improvement program on the Nias Islands.
During his visit, Surya inspected various healthcare facilities at the Botombawo Community Health Center. He also greeted patients using the free medical care program (Probis) and personally viewed a number of facilities that still require improvement.
“We have observed several matters that require improvement. We are working on expanding the capacity of the community health center to a Plus community health center. This will increase the number of facilities,” stated Surya.
Regarding the plan to increase the capacity of the community health centers (Puskesmas), Surya emphasized the importance of cooperation between the North Sumatra Provincial Government and the Regency Government of Nias.

With integrated planning, the allocation of financial support is expected to be more targeted and better aligned with healthcare needs in the region.
“The service provision is reasonably good. However, as the head of the Puskesmas indicated earlier, there is a shortage of beds, medical equipment, rooms, and electricity. This is being addressed through the Provincial Health Bureau’s healthcare improvement program. We are therefore working together with the Regency Government of Nias on the planning,” explained Surya.
Meanwhile, Regent Ya’atulo Gulo of Nias expressed his appreciation for the ongoing visits by the North Sumatra Provincial Government to the Nias Islands to ensure that development proceeds according to plan.
He stated that this support motivates the local government to accelerate the improvement of community well-being, particularly by strengthening healthcare and education. ***rel
