Angkot on Tebing-Serbelawan route crashes into tree
A public transport vehicle on the Tebing Tinggi-Serbelawan route was involved in a single-vehicle accident on the Tebing Tinggi-Pematangsiantar highway, right in front of the SMP Negeri 6 primary school in Tebing Tinggi, on Thursday, March 12, 2026, around 9:00 AM West Indonesian time. The incident shocked local residents and other road users.
The public transport vehicle, driven by a driver named Lelek, suddenly lost control and crashed into a large mahogany tree along the road.
At the time of the accident, the vehicle was carrying seven passengers and was en route from Serbalawan to Tebing Tinggi.
Passengers injured
Several passengers sustained minor injuries due to the hard impact at the front of the vehicle.
Two passengers were rushed to the Pabatu health center for medical treatment, while two others were transported to the hospital in Bhayangkara, Tebing Tinggi.
“There were seven passengers, one man and six women. Two were taken to the Pabatu health center and two to the hospital in Bhayangkara. However, their injuries were not serious,” said a local resident who witnessed the accident.
Accident suspected to have been caused by damage to the minibus’s steering system
Traffic police officers from Tebing Tinggi arrived at the scene immediately to recover the vehicle and evacuate the occupants.
The head of Team B of the Tebing Tinggi Police Traffic Accident Unit, Aipda Kadri C, confirmed that it was a single-vehicle accident.
Initial on-site investigations indicate that the accident was caused by a defect in the vehicle’s steering system. “It is suspected that a steering error caused the driver to lose control. The vehicle sustained significant damage to the front,” said Aipda Kadri.
However, the police confirmed that there were no fatalities or serious injuries in the incident.
All passengers were safely evacuated and received medical assistance.
Shortly after the incident, the vehicle was removed by officers using a tow truck to prevent traffic congestion on the highway.
The damaged public transport vehicle was subsequently seized by the Tebing Tinggi traffic police for further investigation.
This incident serves as a warning to drivers, particularly those in public transport, to always ensure their vehicles are in optimal condition before taking to the road.
Technical damage to a vehicle can lead to accidents that could endanger the safety of passengers and other road users.
