North Sumatra strengthens Universal Health Care (UHC) on the Nias Islands
The Vice Governor of North Sumatra, Surya, emphasized the commitment of the North Sumatra Provincial Government to continuously strengthen Universal Health Care (UHC) in all regions, including the Nias Islands.
According to him, National Health Insurance (JKN) coverage in the South Nias Regency is already very good and must be further improved so that all residents have access to healthcare.

Surya made this statement during a meeting regarding the strengthening of the UHC at the office of the Regent of South Nias. Based on the data presented, JKN coverage in the South Nias Regency has reached 98% of the total population of 373,000.
“Specifically for South Nias, we see that with a population of 373,000, the coverage of Universal Health Insurance (UHC) by BPJS amounts to 98 percent. This means that we are already performing quite well with this percentage. But we want to improve even further. Of the registered population, 84.5% are active. This means that 84% is considered good,” said Surya.
Surya stated that the provincial government of North Sumatra will continue to commit to UHC coverage so that all residents can benefit from health insurance. By 2025, the provincial government of North Sumatra will have co-paid the premiums of BPJS Kesehatan (Social Security Agency) for approximately 39,000 residents of the South Nias district.
Furthermore, Surya stated that the free medical care program, which requires only an identity card, was introduced by the Governor of North Sumatra, Muhammad Bobby Afif Nasution, since he became Mayor of Medan, and that this program is now being expanded to the entirety of North Sumatra.

“Based on the Governor’s experience as Mayor of Medan, people in Medan were able to receive medical care during his term of office simply by showing their identity card. Thanks to his determination, North Sumatra can now access healthcare with just their identity card,” Surya explained.
Meanwhile, Sokhiatolo Laia, Regent of South Nias, stated that 98 percent of the residents in his region participate in the BPJS Kesehatan program. However, he hopes that the North Sumatra Provincial Government can support those who are not yet registered with JKN.
“We want the residents of South Nias to have equal opportunities for good healthcare. We also hope that the Provincial Government of North Sumatra can support the proposed development of community health centers, including those on the island, so that they can be upgraded into community health centers with admission facilities and a combination of clinical care,” said Sokhiatolo.
