Inalum urged to optimize CSR programs around Lake Toba

The Provincial Government of North Sumatra (Pemprov) encourages PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (Inalum) to strengthen its contribution to improving the quality of public education and environmental protection in the Lake Toba region.

This step is expected to improve the quality of life of the community while simultaneously ensuring the sustainability of the environment and the supply chain.

This was communicated by the Vice Governor of North Sumatra, Surya, during a visit by PT Inalum Director Melati Sarnita to the office of the Vice Governor of North Sumatra, Jalan Pangeran Diponegoro No. 30, Medan.

Various heads of regional government agencies of the Provincial Government of North Sumatra and the Board of Directors of PT Inalum were also present at the meeting. Surya proposed that Inalum optimize its CSR program to improve the educational facilities and infrastructure of schools around Lake Toba.

“Inalum can collaborate with local authorities to support schools in the area with additional facilities for which no budget is allocated in the regional or national budgets,” said Surya.

According to Surya, this social responsibility can be realized by providing various educational facilities, such as laboratories and other supporting infrastructure that cannot be financed from regional or national budgets.

In addition to the education sector, Surya also hopes that Inalum continues to prioritize recruiting employees from the communities surrounding the company’s operating areas.

He recalled that when he was a teacher at STM Budi Darma in 1975, many of his students were successfully hired by the company, which is active in aluminum smelting, processing, and distribution.

Surya also requested Inalum to continue strengthening its environmental protection efforts through tree planting programs, the protection of the Lake Toba River Basin (DTA), and efficient water use.

He believes that these steps are crucial for the sustainable preservation of North Sumatra’s natural resources.

Meanwhile, Melati Sarnita, Director-President of PT Inalum, emphasized the company’s commitment to protecting the Lake Toba River Basin (DTA) as a source of income for future generations.

According to Melati, Inalum continues to implement various environmental protection programs, including tree planting, nurseries, the construction of biopores and infiltration wells, eco-conscious schools, forest fire prevention, and the Biodiversity Park (Kehati) program.

“The planting program is being implemented in phases in all areas around Lake Toba. The target for this year is 500 hectares in the water catchment areas. The plant species being planted are selected based on soil suitability and ecological value, including their functions to prevent erosion, improve water infiltration, and increase green space,” she concluded. ***rel
