PLN Director speaks out: apologies for power outage in Sumatra

PT PLN (Persero) offers its apologies for the power outage in Sumatra, specifically in Jambi, West Sumatra, Riau, North Sumatra, and Aceh, which began yesterday evening at 18:44.

Darmawa Prasodjo, Director of PLN North Sumatra, explained that the outage was caused by weather disturbances on the 275 kV high-voltage line between Muara Bungo and Sungai Rumbai in Jambi, which caused a domino effect on the power plants.

PLN has deployed its full team to restore the system, focusing on hydroelectric and gas-fired plants, which can be restored more quickly, while coal-fired plants (PLTU) require more time.

PLN continues to collaborate with the Ministry of Energy and Mining and relevant parties to ensure a fast, safe, accurate, and transparent recovery process. PLN is committed to evaluating and strengthening Sumatra’s electricity grid to prevent a recurrence of a similar incident.

Initial recovery efforts

Within approximately two hours of the incident, PLN successfully restored the entire substation and transmission network.

The next step is restarting the power supply. Hydroelectric power plants (PLTA) and gas-fired power plants (PLTG) can be restored more quickly (5-15 hours), while steam power plants (PLTU) require more time due to the process of heating water to steam.

Some systems in South, Central, and North Sumatra have already been started up, but coal-fired power plants still need time to fully recover.

PLN teams are working day and night and coordinating intensively with the Ministry of Energy and Mining, power plant operators, and regional general directors to ensure that the recovery process progresses.

PLN once again apologizes for the inconvenience and is doing everything possible to restore the power supply as soon as possible. ***tok
