Medan Zoo Threatened with Closing Down • OBROLANBISNIS.com — Medan Zoo, one of the assets of the Medan City Government, is threatened with closing down. Its condition is increasingly concerning even though it was once eyed by top celebrity Raffi Ahmad, to invest in Medan Zoo.
What is very concerning is that the rides such as flying fox, water rides, artificial lakes, and duck paddle rides that are often the favorites of children, now look neglected.
One worker in Medan who did not want to be named, said that the lack of maintenance of Medan Zoo has been going on for a long time.
He also heard information that Raffi Ahmad, Nagita Slavina’s husband, had provided assistance for the sustainability of the Medan City Government’s nature reserve to the previous Mayor of Medan.
There was hope when news was heard that famous celebrity, Raffi Ahmad, would help Medan Zoo. The promise was made by the previous Mayor of Medan, Bobby Nasution. Unfortunately, the promise has not been realized until now.
“Raffi Ahmad said he had provided assistance (most likely in the form of fresh funds) to the Medan City Government. But we don’t know what the funds were used for. He said he wanted to repair the roads in this tourist area, but sir, look for yourself, the condition is still cracked,” he complained recently.
Meanwhile, Medan Mayor Rico Waas and his wife, Airin Rico Waas, on May 20, 2025, had the opportunity to directly review Medan Zoo.
He is committed to making improvements to the zoo managed by the Medan City Development Regional Company (PD).
“We will continue to improve, organize facilities, and ensure that the animals in it are well cared for. In the future, Medan Zoo must be a comfortable, safe, and enjoyable place for visitors and animals,” he said via the Instagram account @ricowaas quoted.
For your information, Medan Zoo has been established since 1952. It was first located on Jalan Brigjen Katamso, Kampung Baru Village, Medan Maimun District.
Then in 2005, Medan Zoo was moved to a new location on Jalan Bunga Rampai IV, Simalingkar B Village, Medan Tuntungan District.
Currently, the remaining animals at Medan Zoo are only two horses, three deer, one crocodile, one white tiger, one elephant, two peacocks, one snake, one orangutan, one chimpanzee, two porcupines, and several birds. ***
