The Education and Culture Festival held by the Medan City Government in the courtyard of the Maimun Palace, Thursday, June 19, 25, was lively and exciting.

In addition to being filled with various creative performances, this activity also handed over diplomas to underprivileged students for the Diploma Redemption program and the launching of School Regrouping.

The excitement and fun of the Education and Culture Festival increased with the presence of the Mayor of Medan Rico Tri Putra Bayu Waas together with the Chairperson of the Medan City PKK Ny Airin Rico Waas who was welcomed by thousands of students from kindergarten, elementary and junior high school levels as well as teachers from various schools in Medan.

Healthy exercise together performed by children from Wahidin Kindergarten and angklung performance by children from Al Azhar Kindergarten made the atmosphere even more exciting and entertained all visitors who attended.

Then, a colossal and multi-ethnic dance performance by students of SMP Negeri 1 Medan and a serampang duabelas dance performance by teachers filled the Medan City Education and Culture Festival.

After the colossal and multi-ethnic dance performance, students of SMP Negeri 1 Medan gave a painting of their work to Rico Waas who is also an alumnus of SMP Negeri 1 Medan.

Building Medan City People

In his speech, Rico Waas said, this Education and Culture Festival is an investment activity of our shared spirit in building intelligent, characterful and cultured Medan City people.

According to Rico Waas, education and culture are the main foundations of civilization, without education we lose direction and without culture we lose our identity. Therefore, both must go hand in hand.

“Pemko Medan is committed to continuously improving access to quality and equal education. We want schools in Medan City to be a healthy growing space not only for knowledge, but also for character, creativity and lovers of local culture,” said Rico Waas.

Rico Waas explained that education in Medan City is getting better and more developed. However, education also has challenges in today’s era.

One of the challenges is technology and also culture from outside Indonesia. This means that we must actually be able to capture the message from these challenges.

Education in Medan City Must Be Even Better

“Education in Medan City must be even better by providing quality education and educating our children to be smarter and also care about culture,” said Rico Waas.

Regarding the challenges and development of technology, Rico Waas continued, many children may watch inappropriate things and see cultures from outside that can contaminate the minds of our children.

Therefore, it is expected that teachers who are second parents besides parents at home can be one of the filters so that children are not contaminated, to explain what problems are seen in the technology space.

“Parents are also expected to be able to prepare our mentality at home as parents on how we behave if our children see things that have not been seen in the world of social media and how to make our children civilized, polite and courteous, especially being able to continue to love our culture,” said Rico Waas.

Rico Waas added, education in Medan City must be better, but don’t forget where culture must also be maintained. Because this is a strength for us, children with good culture certainly have good manners and manners because that is the characteristic of the Indonesian nation.

Culture Must Be Maintained

“We must continue to maintain culture. We hope that teachers can continue to provide education about culture, so that the culture that we have, especially in Medan, this multicultural city can be known and loved by children who also have different ethnic cultures,” Rico Waas hoped.

Next, in the Education and Culture Festival, Rico Waas together with the Medan City Paud Mother, Ny Airin Rico Waas, accompanied by the Regional Secretary Wiriya Alrahman and the Chairperson of the Medan City Dharmawanita, Ny Ismiralda Wiriya Alrahman and the Forkopimda Elements and the Head of the Education and Culture Office, Benny Sinomba Siregar, presented diplomas to parents and students from the Tebus Ijazah program for underprivileged students.

Then Rico Waas also launched the School Regrouping which was marked by pressing the siren button. This School Regrouping is the merger of two or more State Elementary Schools in Medan City into one school, which initially numbered 147 schools to become 61 State Elementary Schools. This regrouping is to realize the quality of education and leadership efficiency.
