Makassar Municipality Helps North Sumatra in Flood and Landslide Response
North Sumatra (Sumut) Deputy Governor Surya has received 500 million rupiah in aid from the Makassar Municipality. This aid is expected to help communities affected by floods and landslides.
Sumut Deputy Governor Surya accepted the relief supplies. These were presented by Makassar Mayor Munafri Arifuddin at the office of the Deputy Governor of North Sumatra, located at Jalan Pangeran Diponegoro No. 30 in Medan, on Tuesday, January 6, 2026.
Aid from Makassar greatly appreciated by affected communities in North Sumatra
Surya expressed his gratitude for the assistance from the Makassar Municipality. He stated that the aid was greatly appreciated by the people in North Sumatra affected by the floods and landslides.
“We will immediately distribute the received relief supplies to the communities affected by the floods and landslides. Eighteen districts/cities in North Sumatra have been affected by the floods and landslides,” Surya said.
Surya explained that North Sumatra is currently in a transitional phase. Various forms of aid have arrived from different regions, including the city of Makassar. Relief supplies are still being transported by land to the disaster-affected areas. “About four to five trucks with relief supplies are being sent daily,” Surya said.
According to the disaster management center, as of January 3, 2026, 479,045 families (1,803,549 people) were affected, of which 3,032 families (14,937 people) were displaced. There were 366 deaths, 205 injuries, and 59 missing.
Makassar prays for the recovery of North Sumatra
Meanwhile, Makassar Mayor Munafri Arifuddin stated that the Makassar city government has carried out a series of humanitarian missions in three provinces. Aid had already been provided to West Sumatra and Aceh.
“Today we were received by the Vice Governor of North Sumatra to deliver a message. We hope that this aid can help the communities affected by the disaster and that North Sumatra can recover from this disaster,” he concluded. ***rel
