Fire Destroys PT Garuda Mas Perkasa Sandalwood Factory
Numerous firefighters from the Medan Municipal Fire Department were still working to extinguish the fire that ravaged the PT Garuda Mas Perkasa sandalwood factory on Jl. KL. Yos Sudarso, km. 6.5, in Medan Deli District, Medan.
According to Wandro Malau, Acting Deputy Chief of the Medan Municipal Fire Department, the fire broke out around 9:50 PM (Western Indonesia Time) on Tuesday evening (January 27).
20 Fire Department Units Deployed, Fire Still Raging
When his team arrived at the scene, the fire had already grown considerably, and thick, black smoke was billowing.
“We arrived at the scene, but we couldn’t get in,” said Wandro Malau, acting deputy chief of the Medan Fire Department, at the scene on Wednesday (January 28).
Wander explained that the fire had destroyed all the flammable rubber materials in the warehouse of the Swallow sandal factory.
“Most of the warehouses contained rubber, and it was dangerous to go inside. So we let it burn for a while so we could get in. All rubber materials are flammable,” he said.
Sandal factory fire claims no lives
Fortunately, there were no fatalities in the fire at PT Garuda Mas Perkas.
The fire has not yet been completely extinguished. His team is still trying to get inside, especially in the rear section where flames are still burning, he said.
Dozens of fire trucks have been deployed by his team due to the fire at the factory. “We have 20 firefighting units,” he said.
Wander said that so far, there have been no fatalities in the fire.
