Employees must understand their rights and obligations before signing an employment contract
The Ministry of Manpower reminds employees to understand their rights and obligations and to carefully review the contents of an employment contract before signing it. This understanding is crucial so that employees grasp the provisions forming the basis of their employment relationship with their employer.
Indah Anggoro Putri, Director General of Industrial Relations and Social Security (PHI and Jamsos) at the Ministry of Manpower, stated that employees must understand the content of their employment contract, including the duties, rights, and responsibilities agreed upon with their employer.

“Employees must understand the contract’s content, as well as their duties, rights, and responsibilities. At the same time, they must also adhere to workplace regulations,” said Indah Anggoro Putri in a statement issued via a press release by the Ministry of Manpower’s Public Relations Bureau on Sunday, September 13, 2026.
According to Indah, understanding an employment contract helps employees comprehend the applicable provisions governing their work. This is also important to ensure that rights are respected and obligations are fulfilled in accordance with the agreement and legal regulations.
Among other things, employees need to have insight into wage arrangements, working hours and rest periods, and annual leave for eligible employees. These provisions should be considered before employees enter into and sign an employment contract.
In addition, occupational health and safety (K3) aspects constitute a crucial part of the employment relationship. Companies are required to provide a safe working environment to protect employees against the risk of accidents and occupational diseases.

Employee protection also encompasses participation in social security programs, such as BPJS Ketenagakerjaan and BPJS Kesehatan, in accordance with applicable regulations.
Indah emphasized that understanding rights must go hand in hand with fulfilling obligations. Employees have rights that must be respected, as well as obligations to perform their work in accordance with applicable agreements and regulations.
“Therefore, rights and obligations should not conflict with one another; rather, they must be understood and implemented in a balanced manner,” Indah stated.
A proper understanding of rights and duties fosters harmonious labor relations. This enables employees to carry out their tasks in accordance with the agreement while simultaneously understanding the rights inherent in the employment relationship. ***rel
***rel
