Medan Prison Monitors Food Security and Farms Fish and Chickens

To monitor the national food security program and promote inmates’ self-reliance, the Class 1 Prison in Medan conducted an inspection and audit of the fish and chicken farming facilities in the Integration and Education (SAE) section of the Work Activities Department on Friday, February 27.

This activity was carried out as part of the routine monitoring of the ongoing fish and livestock breeding program.

Breeding Program Conducted by Class 1 Inmates

The livestock species inspected included tilapia, carp, catfish, as well as laying hens and broilers, which were being cared for by inmates under the supervision of guards.

Inspections are carried out to check the pond’s water quality, assess the availability and quality of feed, monitor fish growth, check cage hygiene, and ensure the health of the chickens.

This step is aimed at ensuring that the entire breeding process is optimal, stable, and productive, thus yielding maximum results.

The head of Tanjung Guata Prison in Medan, Fonika Affandi, stated that the Giat Kerja Ward food security program is part of a sustainable development strategy.

The program is also useful for inmates as a resource or learning tool after release.

“This program not only supports food security but also provides inmates with practical skills in fishing and livestock farming, which they can use as capital upon their reintegration into society,” he said.

He emphasized that productive activities such as these are a concrete expression of development that focuses not only on skills but also on promoting discipline, responsibility, and a work ethic among inmates.

Through regular and structured inspections, Medan Class I Prison reaffirms its commitment to ensuring food security and providing productive, purposeful, and sustainable development to create self-reliant inmates ready for social reintegration.***
